Welcome Back 1st Graders!
In first grade, we start the year with the book, The Shelf Elf. This book is written by Jackie Mims Hopkins and is an excellent book to teach the students about Library manners and taking care of the Library. There is a "Shelf Elf" Award given to one first grade class each month. It goes to the class that earns the most stickers in Library, due to their behavior. The winning class gets the Shelf Elf trophy in their classroom for the month. Stay tuned here to see the winners at the end of each month (starting in September)!
First graders will begin checking out books during their second Library time. They will begin with one book the first week and then will be able to check out two for the rest of the year. First graders will be able to check out books from our Picture Book (fiction) and Non-Fiction sections. During the month of October we will be doing a lesson on finding "Just Right" books. At this time, students will be able to go to the Fiction section to see if they can find a book that is appropriate for them, around their level. There are plenty of chapter books and advanced level picture books in the Picture Book section. So, your child will have quite the variety.
