During the 3rd nine weeks, the students will be reading several books and analyzing the authors' word choices. We talk about how an author's words can paint a picture. Instead of an author writing "there was snow on the ground" one author chose to write "the ground was covered in a soft blanket of snow." We talk about how those adjectives and comparisons help us vision what the author is trying to say.
Most of our stories will focus around different winter holidays and seasonal topics (snow, winter, etc).
During the end of February and beginning of March,1st grade students will be learning about Theodore Seuss Geisel (Dr. Seuss). We will be taking a look at some of his books! We will also be celebrating the Library's Birthday!!!
Congratulations to the following classes for winning the Shelf Elf Awards:
September: Mrs. Fry's Class
October: Holler
November: Holler
December: Holler & Withers (tie)
January: Gibbs & Stout (tie)
First graders can check out two books at a time. First graders will be able to check out books from our Picture Book (fiction) and Non-Fiction sections. During the month of October we will be doing a lesson on finding "Just Right" books. At this time, students will be able to go to the Fiction section to see if they can find a book that is appropriate for them, around their level. There are plenty of chapter books and advanced level picture books in the Picture Book section. So, your child will have quite the variety.
